Directionally dependent strength and dilatancy behavior of soil–structure interfaces

Soil–structure interfaces typically exhibit a shear behavior that is independent of the direction relative displacement due to symmetry in solid material's surface profile. This experimental study investigates interface surfaces with asymmetric profiles inspired by scales snake skin. The results box tests on two sandy soils indicate peak and residual strengths dilatancy are greater when soil displaced against sharp edges asperities (cranial direction) than along (caudal direction). effect asperity geometry response can be captured ratio length height (L/H). Analysis stress–dilatancy indicates relatively short follow classical flow rule developed for soils. However, relationship between mobilized stress rate shown function shearing geometry. Implementation skin-inspired geotechnical structures may provide benefits performance efficiency during installation service life. In general, this soil-structure sheared cranial similar fully rough surfaces. contrast, caudal shares characteristics smooth surfaces, including mobilization smaller strength dilation.
